Machine Learning Enables Broadcasters to Distribute Clearer Images of Radar Data
Huntsville, AL, April 2022 – Baron, the worldwide leader in superior weather intelligence, has developed innovative new radar processing technology that will make dual-polarization radars even more powerful tools for broadcast weather organizations. This new advanced technology will allow broadcasters to identify weather and climate events with greater precision and deliver more accurate displays of weather threats to their viewers.
The Baron ClearScan – The Next Generation of Radar Clutter Mitigation
Introducing the Baron ClearScan, a new radar clutter mitigation technology that provides a clear depiction of actual precipitation. Using machine learning algorithms supported by human intervention, the Baron ClearScan learns to recognize data from actual weather targets versus radio frequency interference (RF) or anomalous propagation (AP). RF interference is caused by other electronic devices and is a growing concern as new technologies like 5G cellular signals increase the potential interference with weather radars, especially C-Band weather radars.

The exclusive ClearScan technology examines reflectivity, velocity, and dual-polarization data to decipher between quality radar data and anomalous propagation (AP) or radio frequency (RF) interference. The Baron ClearScan can recognize AP or RF and remove it from a dual-polarization radar data display in real-time. This instantaneous process allows media outlets to deliver up to the second radar images of a weather event as it is happening, that are simpler for audiences to understand. The technology can be tailored to solve interference challenges that are unique to specific media markets.
In addition, Baron also announced enhancements to their radar processor which now includes a Staggered Pulse Repetition Frequency (PRF) mode which detects wind movement inside a storm with greater precision. This technology provides greater visibility of velocity couplets that cannot be seen in Dual PRF mode and gives broadcasters the ability to identify communities at risk for destructive winds. The feature works well with twisting and straight-line winds, making it valuable during a tornadic event, convective thunderstorms, and tropical events.
