When it comes to flight planning, every detail matters - especially the weather. That’s why iFlightPlanner, one of the premier online flight planning platforms in the United States, partnered with Baron Weather to deliver high-resolution, real-time data that helps pilots fly safely and confidently.

Founded by aviation enthusiasts John Burnside and Andy Matthews, iFlightPlanner offers a fully integrated suite of tools for private pilots and corporate flight departments. Whether using the web or mobile app, users can plan routes, check aviation charts, file flight plans, and with Baron, visualize weather conditions along the way.

Scalable, High-Quality Weather Data

From the start, iFlightPlanner’s founders knew that quality weather data would be essential to their mission. But they didn’t just need a data provider; they needed a partner who could offer flexibility and scalability to grow alongside their business.

“Baron was more than willing to help shape something that would grow with us,” said John Burnside, Co-Founder and Director of Technology at iFlightPlanner. “We needed high-quality products, but also the personal level of support that understood every customer is different.”

After exploring their options, iFlightPlanner chose Baron for its exclusive weather products, multi-platform compatibility, and developer-friendly tools.

Seamless Integration for Safer Skies

Using the Baron Weather API, iFlightPlanner integrated dynamic, map-based weather layers directly into its planning interface. This gives pilots a clear visual of weather conditions from radar and satellite imagery to winds and temperatures aloft.

Some of the key Baron products featured in the iFlightPlanner platform include:

  • High-Resolution Visible Satellite (½ km) – Baron exclusive
  • High-Resolution Infrared Satellite (2 km) – Baron exclusive
  • High-Resolution North American Radar (1 km) – Baron exclusive
  • Surface Analysis
  • Winds and Temperatures Aloft
  • Significant Weather Charts

By combining these products into composite views, pilots can clearly see where clouds and precipitation overlap, which is critical information for planning safer routes and avoiding weather-related hazards.

“A picture is worth a thousand words,” said Andy Matthews, Co-Founder and Director of Business Development. “If we can paint a really clear picture for a pilot of what their flight is going to look like, it raises confidence in the safe operation of the flight.”

Developer-Friendly and Easy to Use

Beyond the quality of the data, iFlightPlanner found the Baron Weather API easy to implement. Baron’s API offers data in standardized formats like JSON and supports industry protocols such as WMS and TMS. The developer documentation portal includes everything from code samples, request/response examples, and API access guides.

“I didn’t need a lot of help in-person to complete the integration, but that’s only because the documentation was so clear,” John said. “You don’t get that from every technology partner you work with.”

A Trusted Partnership

From trade shows to product demos, Baron’s high-resolution weather imagery gives iFlightPlanner a competitive edge and draws attention.

“It’s legitimately like a bug light at a trade show,” John said. “People are walking by and they see our maps with Baron’s radar, they literally stop and stare.” iFlightPlanner-00

iFlightPlanner offers everything from free tools for general aviation to premium, customizable plans for business aviation. Through its partnership with the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), the platform supports hundreds of thousands of pilots across the country - with Baron’s weather data informing each flight plan.

“We’re really good at what we do from a technology and aviation perspective,” said Andy. “And Baron is the best as far as we’re concerned in creating these weather products. Having a partnership like this is fantastic.”
